Created for the Serviten monastery in Vienna, Feuertruhe 2 was a collaboration with Walter Mottl, an expert in Terra Sigillata. The Terra Sigillata surface of the exterior of Feuertruhe 2 bears traces of the flames that moved across it, scorching the tiles and transforming their original white colour into shades of grey and black. Like its predecessor, Feuertruhe 2 is about making the effects of fire visible. I call these stoves “Feuertruhen” or “fire trunks” because a trunk often conserves something valuable. I like the idea of the fire as something precious that has to be sheltered but also tamed and controlled.
